About the Project
The SH88 Dunedin to Port Chalmers shared path project has reached a major milestone with the opening of the 5 km St Leonards to Port Chalmers section on 26 August 2023. This new shared path completes the final link in a continuous 10 km off-highway walking and cycling route between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, providing a safer and more accessible alternative to State Highway 88 (SH88) for cyclists and pedestrians.
Solution
Provide flexible,
reliable solar trackers offering system production increases of up to 25% compared to
fixed-tilt systems to maximize energy yield.
Key features of the project include a three-metre-wide, well-lit shared path, fencing separating the path from the main trunk rail line, and safer connections to the communities along the route. Side safety barriers have also been installed at high-risk locations between Maia and Port Chalmers to enhance safety for drivers on SH88.
We proudly supplied the following safety systems for this project: 3.5 km of Ezy-Guard Driven and Surface Mounted Systems, 100 meters of Ezy-Guard HC Thriebeam System, 1.3 km of MashFlex with concrete footings, over 20 Soft-Stop end terminals, and more than 8 Trailing Terminals. These systems contribute to the overall safety and effectiveness of the new shared path, offering a secure and direct commuting option for walkers and cyclists while improving road safety for drivers on SH88. The shared path, now known as Te Aka Ōtākou, promotes safer, healthier, and more sustainable travel options, addressing the rising demand for safe cycling facilities in Dunedin and creating better connections to the city’s wider cycling network.
